U Thant was the third Secretary General of the United Nations. He helped to create many of the United Nations envirornmental and development agencies and was a strong opponent of apartheid in South Afriaca. Dozens of African and Asian states were admitted into the UN under his leadership. U Thant was criticized by the United States for his criticism of the US's role in the Vietnam War.
