Heroes for a Culture of Peace

Pete Seeger
(1919-)

birthdate: May 3
birthplace:
Patterson, New Jersey

For more than 60 years Pete Seeger has used his music to help promote his wish for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world. His songs, Where Have All The Flowers Gone and If I Had a Hammer and his rendition of We Shall Overcome have become classic staples of numerous social movements over the decades. In addition to his political, labor and anti-war activism, Pete Seeger's environmental passion resulted in the formation of the Clearwater organization and the launching of the sloop Clearwater, which traveled on the Hudson to bring environmental concerns to the public's attention.
