Brother
of President John F. Kennedy, son of Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy, and one of
nine children, Robert F. Kennedy managed his brother's campaign for President
in 1960. Later, John Kennedy appointed his brother Robert Attorney General of
the United States. Both brothers were "idealists without illusions" as JFK once
said of himself and both brothers left lasting marks on history with their stands
for civil rights and a more peaceful world. Robert F. Kennedy was elected Senator
from New York in 1964 and ran for President in 1968. The central idea of his campaign
for President was bringing peace to Viet Nam, but he also championed human rights
and social justice and believed strongly that government should strive to preserve
and maintain pure air and pure water as the birthright of all people. Like his
brother John, Robert Kennedy was assassinated, and died before the Presidential
election of 1968. But many believe that his environmental activism laid the groundwork
for the government's establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency two
years after his death.
